The following legal and ethical issues apply to magazines and newspapers
1. Obscene publications act
This act covers content that could be perceived as obscene, indecent or harmful to the reader, this could include images and text.It is illegal to publish content that may negatively influence the readers.

My audience is an 18-40 male and female audience who are 78% ABC1, they could be negatively influenced by drugs and alcohol therefore I would not have any adverts for any of these products along with not having any business featured that are inappropriate or offensive e.g I wouldn't feature any vape shops as this would be promoting an unhealthy lifestyle.
Alongside this I would also not feature any negative stereotypes in my articles as this is a very negative opinion and wouldn't want to influence any of my target audience in a similar way e,g a sexist opinion of cooks in restaurants being only female
2. Libel Law
Libel is to publish something that could negative or harmful to someone's reputation, this including defamatory or untrue content.Link to my magazine
Based on my genre of being a local magazine I will represent all businesses in a fair way, I will not lie or include defamatory information, even though my audience is older and are adults they are still impressionable, I will send my article to the interviewee before publishing the magazine to ensure he is happy with all the facts and perspectives.
I will ensure that all sources used are reliable e.g looking at Sheffield Council records.
3. Copyright
Copyright gives the original creator the control of how their intellectual property is used, property is not to be used without permission. Intellectual property can vary from assets, ideas, images and text.Link to my magazine
For my magazine I will need to get location permission for the images, I am photographing my models in the featured coffee shop therefore I will need consent from the manager, alongside this I need to get permission to use the Create Coffee logo.
I will maintain permission through email in contacting the Create Coffee owner.
Alongside obvious copyright I will also need to blur our any clothing logos or food logos, due to my images being taken in a coffee shop I will need to be cautious not to include any food logos such as Coca-Cola or Starbucks.
Apart from these assets I will be creating every other aspect of the magazine therefore I wont need to gain permission.
4. Laws of contempt
- Publishing anything that creates a substantial risk of seriously prejudicing "active" criminal proceedings. Proceedings are 'active' when a suspect is arrested
It is a criminal offense to publish content that poses risk to justice proceedings, this prevents magazine from publishing anything too sensationalist about a criminal case.
If the publishing material affects the jury this is very serious and could lead to jail time.

This article demonstrates the law contempt, it shows an article demonstrating a justice proceeding and therefore magazines or news outlets wouldn't be able to speak on the decision till after its been finished in a court of law.
