LO3: Version controls

FRONT COVER

11/3/19
For my front cover i want to produce;
my image edit for the front over, i want to edit the image to suit the magazine genre and ensure the house styles are continuous throughout
I also want to start to create the cover lines and make sure they're placing and colour scheme is compatible with other assets
Lastly I want to start to create my shape and plug for my bottom left asset

After starting production I have started to edit my original image of my model, I changed it into a colder blue hue this to contrast the light orange masthead,
for placing the masthead this took me longer than expected as i wasn't happy with it before additional editing, before adding it to the masthead the original masthead was in black however once placed this was a huge problem as the background image is way to dark to have a readable black font added.
I added an orange hue to my masthead as I liked the relation ot the word buzz and bees but also it brought warmth to the page.
I think the colour hue to the image is a huge strength to the magazine and makes it stand out more as a print product but i am still tweaking the new cover lines as i don't like the kerning size.

14/3/19
After looking at the masthead i have decided that i didn't want to use the san serif font that I originally placed on the front cover i thought the connotations were too childish and immature, I don't think the text went with the age of the model, therefore i have changed the font to 'VOGUE' this font is a lot more sophisticated and unlike the san serif font before this font is very strong serif font and is known to be associated with the very prestigious magazine Vogue.
I definitely think this is more appropriate for the magazine however i'm not still 100% sure that this will be the main font f the magazine.
Alongside changing the font i have added cover lines and shapes however i also don't like the current colour scheme and i think these assets will change as once again i feel they are look too young for the target audience, so i do think the assets will change and wont stay the colours and shapes.
18/3/19

The magazine has changed drastically from the last updated screenshot, I have changed the image of the magazine to the coffee shop owner, Alan.
I decided to change the image as i didn't like the previous image and the edit. After adding the image i adjusted the brightness and added a blue tone to the image, the model before was already wearing a blue shirt however adding the blue tone tied the page together more and created a vintage ambience.
After adding the new image, I chose a yellow and brown colour scheme, after adding the brown additions to emphasis the coffee theme.
I created new cover lines and additions for example with the 'scolding hot exclusive' i added steam graphics once again to create a more visual links to the topics inside the magazine.
21/3/19

The magazine after the last screenshot gained more graphics e.g banner at the bottom, after the page was filled up a little more the magazine looked more realistic and like an actual magazine.
I am unsure about the colour scheme as i don't like the blue and brown combination however Im going to add all my assets to the page before changing and trialing new house styles.
One of the more striking additions is the main cover line introducing the front cover model, this cover line is so eye catching because of the alternating banners that the words are in. The contrast of the banners make the words one of the first assets you look at.

15/4/19
This is my updated magazine, the updates since the last screenshot is very contrasting. I have decided to re edit the image as I felt like the previous version made Alan look ill and his face looked very red in contrast to the cool tones, I re edited the photo in lightroom to try and get a more professional finish to the image, I made the image brighter and lightly warmer and this resulted in a much more complimenting image for the model.
After replacing the image I decided to scrap my graphics and try and re style my graphics as I felt like my graphics were created to compliment the old image. I looked more at real magazines like Kerrang and decided that i needed to make a focal coverline telling the audience about the front cover and who was on it and I feel like this now has made my magazine more realistic and aesthetically pleasing.

18/4/19
After the last screenshot i realised that there wasn't enough colour and graphics on the cover and i wanted the masthead to stand out more, which it didn't previously because all the coverlines were in white.
I decided to add orange to the house style colours to contrast the blue banners that were on the front cover, I also decided that my coverlines needed banners to make them stand out more and differentiate from the masthead more.
I have placed the coverline writing itself in a cream colour to resonate with the warmer tones on the page.
After playing around with adding banners i found that if i alternated colours and sizes of the font then they look alot more conventional to the magazine
genre I am aiming for this was a huge breakthrough and think made a huge difference to the cover.

CONTENTS PAGE

17/4/19
I began to set up my contents page with the intention of having the layout slightly unconventional and instead of having packed writing in columns having it more spread out and varied in size and font, I began to add images that related to the magazine contents and the exclusive interview that was going to be featured on the DP, I placed the title of the page with a thick underline to create focus on the title and demonstrate its status of a title, the underline was also inspired by Exposed magazine which i used heavily to ensure that my magazine followed conventions of my genre.
I have started off using black just to get the layout how i want before i add in any colour, however i want the house style to correlate with the front cover and DP to create continuity throughout the magazine.

After adjusting the page and adding more text and images I think the layout matches my visualisation diagram exactly however doesn't have many conventions of a magazine of my genre, I really like the images on the page however and think it definitely demonstrates what genre of magazine it is, I like the fact that the images are all different sizes and vary between portrait and landscapes this i think adds to the layout and makes the page appear more visually aesthetic.
I like the drop shadow on the numbers however i don't think it fits the conventions of a contents page.
My favourite asset on the page is the Contact Us banner, I think this looks very realistic and the social media links demonstrates my knowledge of my audience and the different platforms i can use.
18/4/19
In this screenshot I am trying to change the layout of my page, I think the alternating numbers across the page make the page look very minimal and there isn't enough writing however I am trying to play around with having my writing in a column style as you can see on the left hand side of the page. Alongside playing with a different layout I have also added my masthead from my front cover to the page and placed the contents page title below, this i think makes the page look so much more realistic, before this change the page didn't appear linked to the rest of my magazine at all.
I have also added banners to the top and bottom of the page this i have done to add colour to the page along with trying to once again conform to the conventions of the magazine genre.
I have also changed the font of the the title and body-copy from Airfly to Arial Black, the font airfly looked uneven and didn't fit the column layout i ended up choosing and I think the Arial Black font is a stronger san serif therefore contrasting with the serif vogue more intensely.

DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD

I have started my double page spread by placing my main cover image of Alan, I then have placed a title containing a pull line, the pul line is placed to grab the readers attention and increase their interest in the article.
I have chosen to have my main cover image in monochrome to create specific connotations for the reader, personally the look of monochrome creates an idea of seriousness but also creating definite contrast within the image, this is advantageous for the magazine itself as the monochrome allows the page to pop due to the contrast.

After the lesson today, I have added the body copy to the page and scaled it to size, I have added the questions of the article in a different bolder font and in capitals this is very conventional of local magazines as the reader can quickly identify questioned and this then also works as a pull.
I also added in a graphic acting as the masthead introducing the interviewee, I placed the text in singular banners and then adjusted them depending on the letter inside this created a very indie aesthetic which fits the article perfectly due to the coffee shop being a small independant company. Next lesson I am working on adding a drop letter to the article to follow very strong magazine conventions.

In this version of the page I have added the drop letter as mentioned in the last updated version, I found that adding this asset made the page look more realistic and demonstrated that I know the magazine conventions of a local magazine.
After adding the drop letter i then decided that the page looked very monochromatic and needed colour to create an eye-catching page that a reader would be drawn too.
I decided to look at the original image and figure out if there was any certain colours that I could make featured, after looking at the image I thought to emphasis the coffee cup that Alan is holding, the cup was a teal colour and so then i decided to make the image a selective colour edit where only the coffee cup was in colour this allowed the reader to understand the colour scheme. On top of having certain words and assets in teal I also decided to make a rectangle in photoshop with low opacity to add to the image this I placed underneath the article to link the two pages together and to bring colour to the right page.

Organisation of files

Here are screenshots demonstrating my filing system and my organised files used in the production of making my 4 pages.

I kept version controls of my contents page/double page spread and front cover in two separate folders, this was to make finding documents easier.
Its really important that i kept separate versions of my pages as if I lost any work or decided I wanted to make any changes I could find earlier versions and start from that point instead of redesigning the whole page.
I named the files dependant on the page and then followed by a V demonstrating the development of versions and progression of the production.
The files in the folders all have a lossless quality because they will be printed and therefore a high quality is needed to ensure that all assets and images are in high definition when scaled and printed.
